A self-catering holiday cottage available to rent for holidays and short-breaks in the village of Thorpeness near Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms the house is ideal for families or couples.
The cottage is located in the heart of the village – just 100m from Thorpeness Meare (where boats can be hired) in one direction and 100m from the shingle beach in the other. Thorpeness has a great pub – The Dolphin Inn, which is a short stroll away on the opposite side of the village. Over the road from Coxswain’s Cottage is the ‘Kitchen@Thorpeness’ which serves fantastic fresh local food – see my ‘News & Offers’ page for more info!
If you are a keen golfer then the 18 hole course at Thorpeness, designed in the 1920s by James Braid, is about 500m away down the far end of Lakeside Avenue and is playable all year round due to the underlying sandy soils or you can play either of the 18 or 9 hole courses at nearby Aldeburgh.
Thorpeness is ‘the original holiday village’ and was created in the early 1900s by local landowner Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie as a purpose built resort where families could enjoy relaxing holidays centred around ‘The Meare’ a shallow man-made boating lake dotted with tiny islands all with a ‘Peter Pan’ theme (J.M. Barrie was a family friend of Ogilvie) You can also play tennis at the Country Club or enjoy a walk or cycle along the beach to nearby Aldeburgh. One event not to be missed is the the annual ‘Thorpeness Regatta’ held in August, which culminates in a magical evening display of floats on the Meare and a spectacular firework display.
The area around Aldeburgh and Thorpeness is renowned as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and there’s lots to do, whether you’re visiting Suffolk for a romantic weekend break, golf, walking, shopping or for a longer family holiday by the sea!
