Schiehallion House, Ballater

Guest House

Schiehallion House Braemar in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park

Schiehallion House has retained many original features in particular the high ceilings, wooden doors and staircase. There is a large comfortable residents lounge which is open all day where you can relax on a cold evening in front of the wood burning stove and enjoy a dram, colour TV  and a DVD player. There are board games to occupy a wet  evening and a variety of  books to browse through. The small lounge is a cosy room. Here we also have a box of children’s toys and books.

The bedrooms are all comfortably furnished mostly all ensuite and one adjacent to a bathroom/shower room and separate toilet. All rooms have a hospitality tray, wash hand basin and information of places of interest to visit.

The bedrooms to the front of the house face east and enjoy the early morning sunshine. The  views over the surrounding Grampian mountains are spectacular. To the east is Craig Coinach and locally know Coo Hill and to the west is the higher summit of Morrone and over to Cairnadrochit.  The rooms facing west benefit from the afternoon and evening sunshine over the mountains.  Schiehallion is surrounded by lovely old silver birch trees which teem with wildlife. Among our regular visitors are roe deer,  red squirrels feeding on the nuts, pheasants  in the garden, tree creepers and woodpeckers on the birch trees. In the evening the owls can be heard in the surrounding trees. Guests are encouraged to explore the garden and spot as many different birds and animals as possible.

Braemar is an ideal centre for everyone. For the more active you can refer to the  large wall map of the area in the entrance hall for walking and climbing routes. We do ask all walkers and climbers to leave details of their routes etc for that day, before they set off. It is an ideal centre for tackling the many ‘munros’ in the area

There a lot of lovely walks round the Braemar area for the less adventurous and we have route maps and can give advice on these. For skiers and bikers we can store skis in the safely of the garage and we have a drying room for dry wet gear.

Golf is very popular and Braemar Golf course is very close by. John being match and handicap secretary at the golf club is always ready to ‘talk’ golf and he can help organise tee times etc for the visiting golfers.

Braemar Castle is just down the road and worth visiting. It has recently been taken over by the Braemar Company Ltd who, have reopened it to the public having refurbished the interior, incorporating lots of new features, all representative of the area. Guides will accompany you on a tour of the castle informing you of all the interesting history, features and plans for the future is.  It is an ongoing exciting venture which may take some time but the castle will be open for you to view the progress and suggestions are always welcome.  Just 7 miles down the road is Balmoral Castle, which is open to the public during the summer months when the royals are not in residence. It is worth taking time to wander round the extensive grounds and gardens as well as visit the castle, display areas and shops.

Braemar has lots of interesting shops to visit and restaurants where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, home baking, snacks or an excellent meal.

A hearty breakfast can be enjoyed by all before going out for the day.
